Mt St Helens Mountaineering Trip

Mt. St Helens Summit
March 21-22, 12 miles, 5700 ft. elevation gain, Very Difficult

We are going to attempt an early season summit of Mt. St Helens. This trip will be about 12 miles roundtrip with 5700ft of elevation gain. This trip is rated as very difficult, so make sure you feel comfortable with this mileage and elevation gain before signing up. Mt. St Helens is a great first mountaineering trip for anyone looking to get into the sport. We invite everyone who feels up for this challenge to register.

The details:

This will be a two-day trip departing from Seattle mid-afternoon on Friday and returning on Saturday evening. We are going to car camp on Friday night with a 4am alpine start on Saturday. This means that everyone will either need to drive separate or carpool and bring a tent to sleep in at the parking lot. We expect to be back at our cars by 4pm. From there we will go out to dinner and then head back to Seattle.

Not sure if you are in shape enough for this trip?

A good rule of thumb is that if you can hike Mailbox old trail without too much difficulty, you should be physically prepared for this trip.

I am interested. Now what?

That is great! Before signing up, make sure to review the gear list linked below. You will need to source most of it yourself. After you sign up, be on the lookout for communication from us. We will be holding a required pre trip meeting and an optional (but encouraged) training hike.

Gear Required:

Here is the full list of gear that is required for this trip. Please note the following technical gear that are required for this trip. The gear closet does not have most of these items. You will either need to buy, borrow, or rent these items:

  • Ice Axe
  • Mountaineering Boots
  • Snow Shoes (the gear closet does have snow shoes)
  • Mountaineering Crampons (not microspikes. Please read here if you are unfamiliar with crampons)
  • Appropriate layers
  • Glacier Googles
  • Microspikes
