SEATTLE IN BLACK AND WHITE BOOK STUDY
August 6th, 20th, 27th, and September 10th, 17th 9-11am, Zoom
Hi there. My name is Ryan Winklemann. I would love to help facilitate a book study using Seattle in Black and White: The Congress of Racial Equality and the Fight for Equal Opportunity. The goal would be to help Bethany's staff and congregation learn about our region's history with racism and help them understand the commitment and community required to make real and lasting change.
Seattle in Black and White is a book that offers two lessons that could go a long way in helping the church gain a greater understanding about how to grow as a positive community member in our region.
First, it offers the knowledge of this history or racism and segregation in the greater Seattle community, at least a piece of it. Seattle as a region has a reputation as a liberal and accepting place, but that unfortunately has never been the case. Seattle in Black and White exposes its reader to the harsh realities of racism in the 1950s and 1960s in Seattle, and provides the tools to see how those patterns still exist in many parts of the greater Seattle area today.
Second, it offers the tools to make change happen in our city, but does not sugarcoat the level of investigation, planning, coordination, and effort required to make just a small difference. It also demonstrates the importance of collaboration across church and secular institutions in order to move the needle in a positive direction to make Seattle look more like God's kingdom.
